Your skin is made up of two very important proteins: collagen and elastin. Collagen is what gives skin its strength and support. It essentially keeps your skin firm and smooth. Elastin gives skin its resiliency. When you pinch your skin it has the ability to go back to the way it was. As skin ages elastin and collagen naturally decrease.
However, free radical damage can ultimately speed up the aging process thus making the skin have fine lines and wrinkled. Free radical damage is caused by overexposure to the sun, pollutants, poor diet, smoking and alcohol consumption. All of these things can lead to a breakdown of those two important proteins.
There are a few steps you can take to slow down the aging process.
Eat a diet rich in lean proteins, Vitamin C and antioxidants.
Consider a chemical peel. This process actually tricks the skin into a healing mode, in turn boosting the skin’s collagen production. Effects will be visible for up to ten days after this treatment. It’s important to work with a licensed esthetician to determine which peel is best for your skin.
Finally, be sure to protect your skin from the sun whenever possible.
These things won’t necessarily erase all lines and wrinkles from your face they can at least help to slow down and prevent new ones from forming.
