It’s easier than you think to keep your hair looking its best! You don’t need to spend money on expensive shampoos and conditioners. You don’t need to make trips to the salon. All it takes is a few natural ingredients and voila – strong, bouncy, beautiful hair!
There are a few things to keep in mind when you make your own shampoo and conditioner. The purpose of shampoo is to keep your scalp and hair clean and free of oil and dirt. Conditioners are meant to protect the hair from drying out, becoming brittle, and breaking. The ingredients in these simple DIY recipes are geared toward achieving these goals
Always keep your homemade hair products in clean containers in a cool, dry place. They may separate and will need to be thoroughly stirred before use. And remember – if they smell bad, they probably are, so throw them out!
Basic Shampoo Recipe (makes 4 oz.)
¼ cup water
¼ cup liquid soap, such as castille
½ teaspoon light vegetable oil (omit if you have very oily hair)
Mix all ingredients together and pour into a clean squeeze bottle or empty shampoo bottle. To use, shampoo as normal and rinse well!
Herbal Shampoo Recipe (makes 8 oz.)
½ cup water
½ cup Basic Shampoo (from above), or mild commercial shampoo
2 tablespoons glycerin
2 tablespoons dried or 1/3 cup fresh chamomile, lavender, or rosemary*
*Chamomile is perfect for fine, light-colored hair, while lavender and rosemary are best suited for darker hair.
Mix water and herbs together and heat gently to make a strong tea. Let mixture steep at least 20 minutes; add shampoo and glycerin to the herbal mixture and stir well. Store in clean squeeze bottle or empty shampoo bottle and let sit overnight to thicken. Use as a normal shampoo and rinse well.
Conditioning Hair Packs (makes 1 treatment)
Conditioning hair packs are weekly deep conditioning treatments rich in natural creams and oils that restore moisture, shine, and bounce to dry, dull, or damaged hair. To make your own, choose one or several of the following ingredients:
For dry hair: coconut oil, banana, avocado, mayonnaise
For normal hair: mayonnaise, egg, olive oil, plain yogurt
For oily hair: add 1-2 teaspoons lemon juice to the above ingredients for normal hair
Mash or stir enough of the product(s) to yield ¼ cup, using more or less depending on your hair length and thickness. Apply the mixture to clean, damp hair. Wrap hair with a large piece of plastic wrap or use a plastic shower cap. Leave on for 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly with cool water. You may need to follow the rinse with shampoo to remove everything.
