Microdermabrasion is one of the most common skin care treatments that estheticians perform regularly. It gives skin a softer, smoother appearance while diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. It can also be used for acne management.
There are two types of microdermabrasion machines. One uses fine crystals that are vacuumed across the face. This particular machine is ideal for oil control and managing breakouts. The second uses a tiny diamond tip. This might be more ideal for focusing on specific areas of the face, such as around eyes, ears and mouth. It can also be used at the same time as therapeutic agents that are infused into the skin.
You will notice that your skin looks smoother and feels softer immediately after the treatment is performed. During the treatment you might notice a gentle, tugging sensation or feel like a soft grain of sandpaper. Your skin may appear slightly pink, but that’s normal. Microdermabrasion can cause irritation if it’s done too aggressively or if it’s not right for your skin type. Your skin will be more sun sensitive and you will need to increase your use of moisturizer and sunscreen.
It’s best if this treatment is performed by a licensed esthetician. Depending on your skin type, you will only want to have microdermabrasion done a few times a year. It’s important to consult with your esthetician to decide on the best plan.
