17 Nov Prevent Holiday Skin Stress
For some, the holidays means doing too much on too little sleep. The stress that piles up, in addition to the harsh, cold winter weather, can leave your skin looking its worse.
If your skin is suffering from the winter and holiday blues, now is the time to take action. Even if you haven’t noticed a change in your skin, preventing issues now may save you the hassle of dealing with it later (as the holidays are in full swing). Often times, the best skin care is preventative care!
Here are a few tips for avoiding holiday skin stress and maintaining a healthy glow long after the holidays are over:
A lot of winter and holiday skin stress is a result of dehydrated skin. Even dark circles can be linked back to lack of moisture! Cold weather, indoor heating, lack of sleep, chaotic schedules, and alcohol can all contribute to your skin woes; to avoid problems, switch to a richer, more emollient moisturizer. Balms, creams, and lotions are best (skip the gel moisturizers during winter).
Unfortunately, stress often equals breakouts. Even if you have great skin that isn’t acne-prone, holiday stress can cause your skin to break out. This is especially true for women, as added stress increases testosterone production, which causes acne. Luckily, over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid treatments can knock out zits before they ruin your holiday parties. For a quick-fix for stubborn red pimples, a drop of Visine will temporarily get rid of irritated skin.
To prevent breakouts before they happen, be sure to gently exfoliate your skin regularly and always completely remove any traces of makeup before going to bed.
No matter what you do to prevent holiday skin stress, there is always the possibility your skin will take a beating. Alcohol, less sleep, and rich food can all contribute to puffy, dull skin after the party is over. To get rid of puffy skin around your eyes or anywhere on your face, cold packs are miracle workers! In 5-7 minutes, cooled or frozen packs (often gel) can take away any trace of puffiness, leaving your skin looking bright, fresh, and awake.
For a quick soothing treatment for your whole face, soak a washcloth in equal parts whole milk and water and lay it on your face for 10-15 minutes. This should help relieve any signs of bloating or an irritated complexion.
