Yoga and Your Skin

Yoga and Your Skin

Anjali MudraYoga has innumerable benefits, not the least of which is what it can do for your skin.  While the poses themselves offer physical benefits, it is the meditative state that is induced and the focus on breath that provides the greatest boost to creating that healthy, radiant glow.

It seems that when we are feeling stressed over a particularly long time, the stress hormones that are released can lead to large number of skin problems.  These problems include acne, thinning skin, itchiness, wrinkles and can even appear as psoriasis or hives.  When you undergo stress for long periods of time the skin becomes deprived of beneficial nutrients.  The body needs to take care of major organs first.  Also, the metabolic function is slowed down, therefore the renewal and rejuvenation of skin cells slows down as well.  This make the skin look dull or gray.

By inducing deep breathing as you would in a yoga practice, you not only balance blood pressure, but you are able to erase the tension, literally, right off of your face.  Also there is an increase in blood circulation which brings about that healthy glow.  The next time you begin to feel yourself experiencing a lot of stress over a long period time – get yourself into a yoga class.  The benefits will be reflected back to you in the appearance of your skin.
