Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work full-time while completing the program?
Yes. Many students work full-time while completing the program. All classes are online via Zoom — attend live or watch the recording on your own time. Clinic hours are self-scheduled, and you have up to 18 months to finish.
What do I need to enroll?
You must be 18 years or older. No high school diploma or GED is required. No prior experience in skincare or beauty is needed.
Can I complete the program if I live outside of Denver?
Up to 400 hours can be completed online from anywhere. A minimum of 200 hours must be completed hands-on in Colorado. Students come from across the state and plan their clinic hours around their schedules.
What does the program cover?
The curriculum combines medical and holistic skincare techniques. You will learn facials, skin analysis, anatomy and physiology, waxing, makeup, brow and lash services, aromatherapy, body treatments, business and ethics, retailing, and state board preparation. After licensure, SBMA offers advanced certification courses in chemical peels, microdermabrasion, microneedling, and dermaplaning.
Can I get credit for previous experience?
SBMA offers comped hours for students with prior experience, including cosmetologists and registered nurses. This can reduce the total hours required and allow you to move through the program faster. Contact admissions for details.
Where can I work as a licensed esthetician?
Licensed estheticians work in medical offices, day spas, salons, waxing studios, facial bars, and private practice. Many graduates start their own businesses.
