With the holiday season just around the corner, now is the time to make sure you have all those last-minute gifts figured out. A thoughtful, handmade gift is always a winner, and this easy DIY body silk recipe will be sure to please both family and friends.
Commercial silk powders can be ridiculously expensive; why break your budget when you can make an affordable, customizable silk powder in a snap at home? Silk powders are great for smoothing out skin’s texture, reducing the appearance of fine lines, and giving skin an overall smooth, soft, silky appearance and feel. This specific recipe can be used on the face and all over the body, and can even be used as baby powder! It can also be lightly dusted on your hair to act as a dry shampoo.
- ½ cup arrowroot
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons orris root powder
- 2 tablespoons clay powder
- 1 teaspoon essential oil
Arrowroot powder can be substituted with cornstarch – however, arrowroot is much finer and silkier in texture, and will result in a softer, smoother powder that feels more luxurious. For the best results, use all arrowroot powder in place of cornstarch.
When it comes to the essential oil, you can use any oil that you like. That’s what makes this recipe so great! For gifts, peppermint oil is great for refreshing, lavender for calming, and vanilla or cinnamon for that traditional holiday scent.
Sift the dry ingredients together over a bowl to break up any lumps. Add the essential oil of your choosing and mix well.
For use as baby powder, use only ¼ teaspoon each of lavender and neroli essential oils. If you are looking for a diaper rash remedy, one teaspoon each of myrrh and goldenseal can be added.
Store your body silk powder in an airtight glass container. This recipe makes 1 cup and can easily be increased!
