Is it aesthetics or esthetics?

For our school name, we chose to use the spelling with the “A” – Aesthetics. We chose the spelling with the “A” because that’s the traditional spelling used more in academic contexts, such as art and philosophy.

The spelling with the “E” – Esthetics is a modern spelling and is used in the beauty and spa industry. Yes, we are part of the beauty and spa industry, but we also like the traditional context that’s associated with the “A” spelling. We see what we do as Art – so the spelling should have a more artful connection as well.

In the United States, “esthetics” is commonly used for the licensed skin-care profession, while “aesthetics” has a broader meaning connected to beauty, art, and design. When Aesthetics was first introduced in America, the education was more European and Eastern European-inspired and taught. So, aestheticians who have been around longer tend to also use the spelling with the “A” as Europeans use that spelling.

Aesthetics – Esthetics

The general field of skincare and beauty treatments, including facials, makeup application, and other treatments focused on improving the appearance and health of the skin.

Aesthetician – Esthetician

A title for a professional who is licensed to perform esthetic services. Estheticians are trained to assess skin conditions, recommend products, and perform treatments to enhance beauty and maintain skin health.
